๐Ÿฐ Our Family Stay at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

Fun Things to Do, Insider Tips & Resort History for Families

We stayed at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in January, and it quickly became one of those Disney hotels that surprised us—in the best way. While it’s often known as a convention resort, what we found instead was a beautifully themed, family-friendly destination packed with activities, wide-open spaces, and plenty of Disney magic all year long.

โœจ Quick Facts for Families

  • Resort Type: Moderate Disney Resort
  • Opened: 1997 (Gran Destino Tower added in 2019)
  • Theme: Spanish, Mexican & Southwest-inspired
  • Best For: Families who want great pools, space to explore & resort activities
  • Don’t Miss: The Dig Site pool & nighttime fireworks views

Whether you’re visiting Walt Disney World during cooler winter months or planning a summer vacation, Coronado Springs offers unique experiences for kids, parents, and everyone in between—without even stepping foot in a theme park.

๐ŸŒต A Little History: What Makes Coronado Springs Unique

Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort opened in 1997 and celebrates the cultures of Spain, Mexico, and the American Southwest.

The resort is centered around Lago Dorado—Spanish for “Golden Lake”—with bridges, courtyards, and colorful tilework designed to feel like a destination all its own.

Did You Know? Gran Destino Tower is inspired by Destino, a short film collaboration between Walt Disney and artist Salvador Dalí.

It’s also one of the largest Disney resorts by footprint, meaning more walking paths, open space, and peaceful corners for families.

โ„๏ธ Our First Impression (Visiting in January)

Visiting in January meant cooler weather, fewer crowds, and a relaxed pace—perfect after busy park days. Even in winter, the resort felt lively with kids playing, families walking the paths, and activities still running.

This is definitely not a “summer-only” Disney resort.

๐Ÿ’ฆ The Dig Site Pool: A Must-Do for Kids

The heart of family fun at Coronado Springs is The Dig Site, a Mayan-themed pool area that kids absolutely love. It was just a little too chilly for us this time! (Really more for the parents comfort than our kids!)

  • ๐Ÿ›๏ธ A 50-foot Mayan pyramid centerpiece
  • ๐Ÿ† The popular Jaguar Slide
  • โ™จ๏ธ One of the largest outdoor hot tubs at Disney World
  • ๐Ÿงญ Explorer’s Playground with an archaeology theme

Parent Tip: There are three quieter leisure pools around the resort—perfect for nap-time swims or low-key evenings.

๐ŸŽฏ Year-Round Activities for Families

  • ๐ŸŽฎ Iguana Arcade
  • ๐Ÿ Volleyball, ping pong, shuffleboard
  • โ™Ÿ๏ธ Giant chess & checkers

  • ๐ŸŒด Hammocks and sandy lake areas

๐ŸŽฌ Movies Under the Stars & Campfire Fun

  • ๐Ÿฟ Complimentary Movies Under the Stars

๐ŸŽ Macaroni Kid Insider Tip

Fireworks without the crowds! Around 9:00 PM, head to the 16th floor of Gran Destino Tower—Toledo or Dahlia Lounge—where you can often see fireworks from Magic Kingdom AND EPCOT at the same time.

Pro Tip: Arrive early to grab the best viewing spot, especially during peak travel seasons.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Dining the Whole Family Will Love

  • ๐ŸŒฎ Siesta’s Cantina (poolside favorites)
  • โ˜• Cafe Rix & Barcelona Lounge
  • ๐ŸŒ‰ Three Bridges Bar & Grill (right on the lake)
  • ๐Ÿท Toledo & Dahlia Lounge for parent nights
Parent Tip: Make sure you make more reservations than you might need - you can always cancel (just make sure you read each restaurant policy)!

๐Ÿ’› Our Final Take

Our stay at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort felt like the perfect blend of Disney magic, relaxation, and family-friendly fun. No matter the season, this is a resort where the hotel itself becomes part of the vacation—and that’s always a win for families.
