When your child doesn’t make the team, the whole house feels it. Here’s how to help them process the hurt, rebuild confidence, and take their next steps forward.
If your child plays school sports, you know the emotional roller coaster: weeks of practice, nervous tryouts, and then the moment the roster is posted. When our kids don’t make the team, it affects everybody.
Some years are lighter. Some feel like they knock the wind out of us. And then there are years that take your legs from under you. We had one of those recently.
My teen worked so hard to try out … and didn’t make it. I saw his heart break, and mine broke too. The disappointment was sharp. We want our kids to feel seen, loved, and capable in every corner of their world.
That moment when a dream is just out of reach ... it stings.
Instead of rushing to “fix” things, I let myself feel it too. That night, I just sat beside him. No pep talk. No solutions. We talked about how much it sucks. We cried. We breathed.
“Today is for feeling. Tomorrow is for deciding what’s next.”
Because here’s what I realized: when your child doesn’t make the team, they have two real choices.
- Stay stuck in the disappointment, feeling like a victim.
- Take in the hurt, process it, and then decide what to do next.
Teens don’t always have the “big picture” brain yet. Their emotions feel enormous—this is where we step in to help guide, support, and plan.
So we listened. We planned. We built something he could own: a simple gym routine based on his own goal of getting stronger—not because we told him to, but because he chose it.
The next morning, I saw the torn-up tryout letter in the trash ... and later heard him ask, “Mom, when can we go to the gym?” That gave me hope.
