October Is Family History Month: Simple Ways to Celebrate Your Story in North Houston

Turn photos, recipes, and stories into treasured family memories — activities for toddlers through teens across The Woodlands, Spring, Humble, Kingwood, Cypress, Tomball, Katy and beyond.

Did you know October is Family History Month? It’s an underused little holiday that’s perfect for making memories and preserving family stories. Whether you live in The Woodlands – Montgomery (Woodlands, Conroe, Magnolia, Montgomery), Greater North Houston (Humble, Kingwood, Atascocita, Spring), or NW Houston (Cypress, Tomball), there are simple, kid-friendly ways to celebrate without spending a dime.

Why Family History Matters

Family stories help kids feel rooted, teach resilience, and spark curiosity. You don’t need a genealogy subscription to start — just a few photos, a curious question, and a bit of time.

Easy Activities for Every Age

Toddlers & Preschool (Ages 2–5)

  • Photo Tell-and-Show: Pull out a box of photos and ask toddlers to point and say who’s in the picture. Keep it playful — “Where’s baby you?”
  • Memory Match Game: Make pairs from printed family photos and play a simple matching game on the floor.
  • Handprint Keepsakes: Make a handprint page that lists each child’s name and favorite thing right now — date it and tuck it away.

Elementary Kids (Ages 6–10)

  • Interview a Relative: Let kids ask 5 questions and record the answers on a phone. Ask about childhood games, foods, or school days.
  • Family Photo Wall: Create a hallway gallery with captions written by kids — “My Grandpa at 10” or “Aunt Sara’s wedding cake.”
  • Local History Walk: Visit the Spring Historical Museum or Humble Museum for quick, local history that sparks conversation.

Tweens & Teens (Ages 11+)

  • Oral History Project: Older kids can storyboard a short video interview with a grandparent — add photos and music for a mini-documentary.
  • Digital Scrapbook: Use free tools (Canva or Google Slides) to compile scanned photos and captions — save as PDF to share with family.
  • Genealogy Scavenger: Challenge teens to find where great-grandparents lived using local records or library archives (see resources below).

Tips to Get Started (No Experience Needed)

  • Start small: One interview or one page of a scrapbook is progress.
  • Record stories: Use your phone for audio or video—your voice matters more than perfection.
  • Label photos: Date and note who’s in each picture so future generations aren’t left guessing.
  • Keep it fun: Add snacks, playlist music from your childhood, or a themed recipe night tied to a relative’s story.
