Hands in the Clay: Come And Make It!

Our First Pottery Experience at Lone Star Clay Studio

By Kirsten Swanson | Macaroni KID The Woodlands - Montgomery June 12, 2025

If you're looking for a unique, hands-on activity that combines creativity, connection, and a little bit of messy fun, make plans to visit Lone Star Clay Studio in Montgomery. My son and I recently took our first pottery class with the incredibly talented and kind Mrs. Dee Dee, and it was an experience we’ll never forget.

Tucked away in a charming studio in Montgomery, Lone Star Clay Studio offers pottery classes for kids and adults alike. Whether you’re looking for a fun family activity, a date night idea, or a creative girls' night out, this spot has something special to offer.

Playing with Clay

Our class started with making pressed plates using soft clay and a huge selection of handmade stamps—created by Mrs. Dee Dee herself! There were flowers, hearts, animals, Texas shapes, and more. My son had a blast choosing his favorite stamps and pressing them into the clay. His favorite part? Using the wire tool to cut the finished plate off the board. He thought that was the coolest!

Next, we used our hands to sculpt little animals. My son made a bunny, and I attempted a dinosaur (we’ll see how that turns out!). It was definitely harder than it looks, but so much fun to try.

Then came the grand finale—the pottery wheel. My son got to spin his very first clay bowl, and he absolutely loved it. Watching his face light up as he shaped the spinning clay with his hands was such a special moment.

A Patient, Passionate Teacher

Mrs. Dee Dee was incredibly patient and encouraging throughout the class. My son is on the younger end for her classes (recommended for ages 6+), but she guided him with so much warmth and support. We also learned that she’s highly respected in the art world and often recreates pottery pieces for historical museums across Texas!

We can’t wait to return to the studio—and we’re so excited to see how our creations turn out once they’re fired and glazed. Check back in a few weeks for an update on our final pieces!
