A New Safe Option for Moms in Crisis: Safe Haven Baby Box

New Safe Haven Baby Box in The Woodlands gives parents a safe, anonymous option in crisis.

April 29, 2025

Did you know that Texas has a law that allows parents to legally and anonymously surrender a newborn—no questions asked? And now, there’s a new, safe place to do just that, right here in our own backyard.

On Monday, April 28, 2025, a Safe Haven Baby Box was installed at The Woodlands Fire Station #6, giving local parents in crisis a life-saving option—no face-to-face interaction required.

What is a Safe Haven Baby Box?

If you're not familiar with them, Safe Haven Baby Boxes are specially designed to give moms (or dads) a completely anonymous way to surrender an infant safely and legally. The box is installed in an exterior wall of a fire station or hospital. When a baby is placed inside, a silent alarm immediately notifies staff inside the building. The baby is then quickly retrieved and cared for by medical professionals.

In Texas, parents can legally surrender a baby up to 60 days old—no names, no judgment, just safety for the child.

This is the 338th Safe Haven Baby Box in the U.S. and the first in The Woodlands, marking an important step for local families and for moms who might be facing unimaginable circumstances.

Why This Matters for Families in The Woodlands

This new baby box is more than a metal door in a wall—it represents hope, second chances, and the power of a supportive community. Last summer alone, six babies were abandoned in the Greater Houston area. Two of those babies didn’t survive. This Safe Haven Baby Box gives parents a safer choice, one that’s legal and compassionate.

“This box could save a life,” said Dr. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, a Township Director who spoke at the unveiling ceremony. “It gives parents in crisis a real option—and it could be the difference between tragedy and hope.”

The Baby Box is located on the outside of the building and is accessible 24/7. If you or someone you know is facing an unplanned or overwhelming situation, this box is available—quietly, compassionately, and legally.

What Parents Should Know About the Safe Haven Law in Texas

  • You can surrender a baby up to 60 days old.
  • You won’t face legal consequences if the baby is unharmed and left at a designated Safe Haven location (fire station, hospital, or baby box).
  • You don’t have to speak to anyone or give your name.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes mission is to prevent illegal abandonment of newborns by raising awareness, offering a 24-hour hotline for mothers in crisis and offering the Safe Haven Baby Boxes as a last resort option for women who want to maintain complete anonymity.
