Puppy Chow: My Favorite, Super-Quick Snack Recipe

The perfect sweet, quick, and easy snack for a last-minute occasion.

By Ashley Lancaster December 23, 2020

It might be said that I'm a bit of a "hot mess mom." Schedules, charts, and organization aren't exactly my strong suit, so it stands to reason that I often find myself running last minute errands or running to the store 10 minutes before a party. One snack that has moved to the top of my "Oh Sh**" list is Puppy Chow. It's cheap, easy to make, and always a smash hit at parties, camping trips, or as a post-game snack for the kids. There are hundreds of recipes and combinations for everyone whether you like sweet or savory treats, but here are five of my go-to combos.

"Basic" Puppy Chow
Total Time: 15 mins.
Servings: 36

Ingredients

- Rice Cereal Squares, 9 cups (I usually buy WalMart's Great Value Rice Squares)

- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

- 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar or confectioners' sugar.

Instructions

- Melt the chocolate chips in a saucepan over low heat and add in the peanut butter. Mix until smooth and slightly runny.

- Place 1/4 of cereal into a large mixing bowl. Remove chocolate mix from heat and pour over the cereal. With your hands, toss and mix the cereal and chocolate until the rice squares are fully covered. Continue to add cereal and chocolate to the bowl until it is all mixed evenly.

- Pour sugar into large gallon bag or empty cereal bag. Add in the coated cereal and shake well, until the whole mix is coated with the sugar.

- Store in an air tight container.

- **Optional** I like to place the mix in the fridge to chill overnight so that the mix can hold together a little better.

Andes Mint Mix

Follow above recipe, but replace 1/2 to 1 cup of the semi-sweet chocolate chips with Andes Mint squares, depending on your preference. Sprinkle in Mint M&Ms or remaining Andes Mint candies.

Hazelnut Mix

Follow above recipe, but replace peanut butter with Nutella Hazelnut Spread. Yum!

Red Velvet Cake Mix

Remove peanut butter from the recipe and add 1/2 cup of chocolate chips. Use 3/4 cup powdered sugar and 3/4 cup red velvet cake mix to toss coated cereal.

Salted Dark Chocolate Mix

Use 1 cup bittersweet or dark chocolate in place of semi-sweet. Add 3/4 teaspoon Kosher salt and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to the mixture before coating the cereal.
